Central High School has a new face floating around the halls this year. Mr. Kevin Wilson is excited to join Central High School as the new Computer Applications teacher. He is very thankful for the opportunity to come to Central.

“I was blessed that the opportunity came open to teach here late in the summer. I was teaching at a different school last year and the school lost my position because they had a decrease in the number of students at the school. I was looking for a job this summer and was really excited when I saw Central might be an opportunity.” shared Wilson.

Computer Applications may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about school classes, as it is not as common a subject as English or Algebra. Though Mr. Wilson’s case, he has always loved computers and has had a “natural aptitude” when working with them.

“I was always the person my coworkers called when they had computer troubles. It has been a pleasure getting to help prepare students to use computer programs that will be very important as their school careers and business careers progress.”

He started coaching basketball at Hamilton Heights Christian Academy part time in 2010,  and that is when he started to consider teaching.

“I believe teaching is a calling by God. I really enjoyed the training aspect of my previous careers. I have also worked with our church’s youth group most of my adult life, so I have really enjoyed the idea of preparing teenagers for life after high school.” He explains in detail how he discovered his favorite subject.

He returned from a church mission trip a couple years later and finally decided to pursue teaching. Now, his favorite subject to teach to his students is Microsoft Excel, which is a “computer software program that is used for storing, organizing and manipulating data”, according to Spreadsheets.com. Even though a lot of students express distaste towards the program, Mr. Wilson believes it is essential information in order to become experienced in Computer Applications.

“I used this more than any other application in the business world and even played around with it in my spare time when I was in high school and college. Many students hate it, so I enjoy the challenge of helping them see how awesome its features are. Many of them are not convinced to love it like I do, but at least they will know how to use it when they see it again in an office setting someday.”

And not only is Mr. Wilson passionate about Computer Applications, but Accounting as well. In fact, it was his first degree in college, and he trained in it for five years.

“I still love Accounting and would enjoy it again if I couldn’t be a teacher. In a perfect world, I would love to teach an Accounting class and enjoy both careers at the same time.”

So, how is Mr. Wilson adapting to Central High School so far? Well, he is doing great and enjoys the new environment a lot.

“I am really enjoying Central. The school spirit here is the best of any school where I have taught, which adds an extra excitement to everyday.”

In addition, he believes there is a great faculty and student body here at Central who show much enthusiasm and represent the Purple Pounders excellently.

And, honestly, who could disagree with that?
