Central Students Receive New Chromebooks for the 2019-2020 School Year

Hamilton County has decided that for the 2019-2020 school year Central is to be a part of the one to one initiative. The one to one initiative is defined as schools that provide each student with an electronic device so that internet, digital textbooks, and digital courses are readily available.

The County hopes to advance student achievement by making the internet and computer media readily available so that students can work on assignments. Through this initiative, the County strives to meet the needs of each individual student and teach digital citizenship– the understanding of how one should use technology accordingly. The purpose of this program is to qualify students for a technologically abundant society.

Central students each have their own different opinions about and uses for the new Chromebooks.

“I think it’s a good way to separate school use from personal [use] and it’s a more portable laptop than my own,” said Grant Scott, a senior. “[The Chromebooks] are a good way to provide electronic resources to students that don’t own computers. They’re more powerful than phones, so they allow more to be done.”

Another senior, Elena Salgado, said, “I believe it will help out with time only. I have done my homework without Chromebooks, but now it’ll be easier and faster to do it.”

One freshman, Seth Young, who has his own personal Chromebook, said, “The new [Chromebook] hasn’t really helped me, I guess. Both my Chromebooks have the same function and there’s not much of a difference.”

The new Chromebooks are touch screen, able to fold backwards, and come with a stylus pen. These Chromebooks can only be used for school purposes and they cannot be personalized or used for personal reasons.

Regardless of what many may think of the new additions, the laptops definitely demonstrate the big role that technology has begun to play in modern schooling.
