Breann Duncan has recently filled the job of social worker at Central High School. She also serves as social worker at Brown Middle School, Snow Hill Elementary, and Washington Alternative.  Roberta LeWinter, who previously served as school social worker, retired earlier this year.

Duncan’s job is to support the well-being of school-age youth and families and to maximize social and emotional development for academic support, she explained. She connects services for home-bound and homeless students with central office and responds to individual referrals addressing barriers to academics, health, wellness, and attendance.

“Social Workers network with community agencies to stay abreast of available resources to serve students and families more effectively,” said Duncan, who received her bachelor’s degree in Social Work at West Virginia University and her master’s degree in Social Work at East Carolina University.

“What I enjoy most about being a social worker is helping students and families that are in need. I’ve always wanted to make a difference in the world, and I am a humanitarian by nature. If I can make a small impact in a student or family’s life, then that is my definition of success,” she added.

Duncan wanted to become a social worker to empower people to help themselves and also to help relieve suffering, fight for social justice, and improve lives and communities.

“She is a wonderful person, and we are excited to have her be a part of our team here at Central!” said 10th and 11th grade counselor, Ms. Chelsea Thornhill.

Duncan is at Central on Mondays and Wednesdays and her office is located inside the guidance suite; students can reach her by email at duncan_breann@hcde.org.
