Softball Season in Review: Central Finishes Third at State

The 2014-2015 Central Softball team started from the bottom and ended up on the top this past season. From conditioning at the Fury training center in October to hours and hours of practicing on the field, the Lady Pounders ended their season on May 21 at the state tournament placing third overall in their division.

The Lady Pounders had a rough time in the beginning of the season with losses against East Hamilton, Baylor, and Walker Valley, but ended up rising above that and working even harder.  Overall the Lady Pounders won 17 games and lost 4 this season, but this does not include the tournaments they played every weekend.

“I think it started out kinda rocky, but overall it was an excellent season. I think every girl came out and put their best effort towards each goal we set,” stated the only senior, Ally Welch.

After countless hours of playing, hitting, and fielding it was time for the girls to progress up to their main goal, which was going to the state tournament in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. They won the district tournament against Red Bank, won sectionals against Sequoyah, and finally won region against Macon County which then advanced them to State.

“We went through some ups and downs and played good competition in the regular season, but I think it prepared us for the competition in the post season,” commented head coach, LeeAnne Shurette.

This past week (May 19-23) the Lady Pounders packed up their uniforms and competed in the State Tournament in Murfreesboro. Overall, there were eight teams in the AA Division, all being the best in their region.

“Overall [at State] we had a lot of good competition. I think we did the best we could,”commented Welch.

While at state, the girls placed a new record for most homeruns hit in a single game. During their first game against DeKalb County, the Lady Pounders ended up hitting five homeruns, or as the girls call it, Dingers.

“We hit a lot of dingers!” stated freshman, Kaili Crawley.

In the end , the girls ended up placing third overall in their division. As a whole, the Lady Pounders had a very successful season and plan to return next season to finish what they started. Coach Shurette has already planned out exactly what is to become of the 2015-2016 softball team.

“We will start our strength and conditioning with Coach Green in October to become better athletes and prevent injuries. We will also schedule very competitive teams and tournaments for the regular season to prepare us for post season. Maybe even a tournament to Disney or the beach for team bonding time,” concluded Shurette.

We at the Central Digest congratulate the girls and how well the represented Central High School. Hopefully, we will be as successful as we were this past season.
