ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS TO SENIORS — Riley Martin receives Principal’s Scholarship on 2021 Class Night.

The Chattanooga Central High Alumni Association funds several scholarships available for seniors. The Association strives to improve communication among Central Alumni, support Purple Pounders, and preserve the rich history and traditions of Chattanooga Central High School.

Forms will be available within the next few weeks for seniors to apply and write a personal essay for the scholarships funded by the members of the alumni association. The form and essay are due by March 15. Once they are submitted, the application and essay will be shared with Lucy Bottorff, the chair of the CHS Scholarship Committee, and the other committee members.

“In 2002, the scholarship funds began with the Coach Gordon Smith Scholarship and the Ray Moss Scholarship,” Buffy Hoge, the President of the Alumni Association shared.

The Coach Gordon Smith Scholarship honors Coach Smith, the Central basketball coach from 1954 to 1973. The Ray Moss Scholarship honors Ray Moss, an All-American football and baseball player at Central. After graduating, he lettered in both baseball and football at the University of Tennessee- Knoxville. Later in his life, he became the founder of Golden Gallon.

Since then, many scholarships have been created to honor Central Alumni and support current Central Pounders.

The E.B. Etter Scholarship honors Coach Etter, the Head football and baseball coach from 1933 to 1968. While coaching, the baseball team won a  state champion title and the football team won the state championship seven times.

The Stan Farmer Scholarship honors Coach Farmer, the assistant football coach from 1947 to 1970. Farmer is also served as the principal in 1977.

The John Holden Scholarship honors John Holden who graduated from Central in 1959 and was voted “Most Talented.” He is a proud supporter of the Alumni Association and CHS activities. He also founded Pioneer Credit Corporation, which is now the Pioneer/ Mariner Group.

For the Principal’s Scholarship, nominations are made by the Principal Phil Iannarone with regard to students who plan to attend University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

The Warren Mackey Jr. Memorial Scholarship honors Warren Mackey Jr., a member of the Central Varsity Basketball team who tragically died in a car accident.

Massengill was a broadcaster for over 70 years and was nominated to the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame. Masingill passed away in 2014 at the age of 92.

It is important for seniors to apply for these scholarships, because the Alumni Association is giving away thousands of dollars to support students, which in turn helps create a strong Alumni Association

— Central College and Career Advisor, Stacy Alexander.

The “Spirit of Central” Scholarship was created in honor of Ed Hoback and Connie Hay. Hoback graduated from Central in 1959. Hay did not graduate from Central, however his two children are Central graduates and since then he has ‘adopted’ Central as his own.

The Teachers’ Scholarship has preference given to applicants interested in becoming an elementary, middle, or high school teacher in Tennessee.

The Kirk Walker Scholarship honors Kirk Walker, 1944 Central graduate and “Mr. Central.” Walker is a former Mayor of Chattanooga.

These scholarships were designed to honor Central Alumni and support current Purple Pounders as they transition into college.
