One of the most controversial topics in Hamilton county to date is the student cell phone restriction policy. Due to what teachers and members of the school board believe to be severe distraction within schools, on July 20, 2023 the Hamilton County school board approved a policy that went into effect this school year. This policy consists of the restriction of taking photos or recording videos of any kind on school grounds or at school events. Many more restrictions were aslso detailed for grades K-12.
Students aren’t very fond of this new policy, with many believing it to be “unnecessary” and “too much” as many of the older students (9-12th grade) use their devices throughout the school day for all kinds of things. Others see where the school board is coming from putting this into place due to all that could happen. It’s even been seen in some eyes as useful, gaining the attention of their students and giving them more control in class and keeping things productive.
After speaking with a couple students and staff there were mixed thoughts on this particular topic, it made for an interesting conversation at the end.
Senior, Reggie Glover, said, “ I mean I kinda see why they did this, it helps keep the noise down in class and helps concentrating not hearing phones. But all day everyday is wild. We’re at school from 7:20 to 2:20 with no phone or AirPods or they get taken.
